Chod means ‘to cut.’ It is a practice of cutting through the roots of suffering and mental afflictions. Intertwined with Tibetan Buddhist practices of death and dying, Chod is practiced at funerals, as preparation for death and as a courageous way of life.
To practice Chod requires empowerment, a ritual initiation, followed by training. When the student is ready, the Chod is then practiced in 108 charnel grounds. Chodpa Kunzang Dorjee continues the Chod tradition, wandering from cremation ground to cremation ground to sing the ancient melodies and express the radical bravery of the Chod lifestyle do retreats in the charnel grounds, forests, mountains and remote areas to facilitate facing fears and overcoming dualism.
