Preparation/ Prerequisites
Traditionally in Tibet, before someone is able to practice Chod, it is compulsory for one to finish their ngondro, or preliminary practices. In keeping with the times and following the advice of his Lamas, Chodpa Kunzang Dorjee does not require that his students complete ngondro before starting to learn Chod practice with him. As he puts it, is is beneficial but not compulsory before starting Chod practice. He does, however, require that the tradition of having received the Yumka Dechen (Khandro Yeshe Tsogyal) Chod Empowerment be met before starting Chod practice. If a prospective practitioner or student hasn’t received this wonderful empowerment, Chodpa Kunzang Dorjee can arrange for it with one of his Lamas.
To learn the fundamental preliminaries of Chod practice, Chodpa Kunzang Dorjee recommends that students commit to an intensive Chod course where they learn how to play damaru, bell, and learn the visualizations and basic melody of the Nyingthik Chod tradition. Time permitting and with a student who is deemed to be sufficiently ready, Chodpa Kunzang Dorjee can also arrange for more advanced Chod study which might include learning various Tsok offerings ( Tsok Lay Richen Twring Wa), Chod healings, fire puja ( dorchod), Chod retreats, and cemetery practices.
